What is the subject matter of the film/movie The Rainmaker is?
According
to John Lennon, “I believe in everything until it is disproved. So I think in
fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it is in your mind. Who is
to say that dreams and nightmares are not as real as the here and now? The
Rainmaker reminded me of these lines.
The Rain
Maker, 1997, had been adapted from a novel written by John Grisham in the
year 1995. The movie revolves around the courtroom, law school, and all the
miseries of life. It is a legal drama film based on the story of a boy who
completed his law and was yet to complete his bar exam. He came across a
destitute client who suffered from leukemia. Medical intervention could have
spared his life, but the Insurance Company denied coverage for the bone marrow
transplant. He filed a case against the company and had to face ruthless
situations. He went on further to go head-to-head with one of the best defense
attorneys and powerful industries in America. Rudy, who just cleared his bar
exams, tactfully handled his case. This story clearly depicts, how belief in
yourself can help you to achieve what you want. His endless dreams, passion,
self-esteem, and confidence made him win the case against insurance firm.
What is the theme of the film/movie The Rainmaker is?
The
movie is concerned with a claim against an insurance company in civil law. I
found the movie to raise important issues about the legal system and the legal
profession that are relevant and provocative. The insurance company, Great
Benefit, seems to be huge, heartless, arrogant and corrupt. The company decides
not to pay for a bone-marrow transplant, as it did not meet the policy
requirements, and the person dies. From my perspective, the important issue
raised here is the flexibility of the insurance company, and whether the company
is responsible for the death or not. The transplant is an experimental
procedure and Rudy truly justifies it. I am strongly in favor of the legal
strategies adopted by him in defending this case, which holds a legal advantage
as the medical council of the insurance company had advised for bone-marrow
transplantation because it was now standard medical procedure.
The
issues that contradicted my opinions many times were the breaking up of the
laws for the sake of the justice like tapping up of the conversation.
Confidentiality of Information was another legal violation by the lawyers. A
lawyer may reveal such information only if he believes is reasonably necessary.
Here, the insurance company was liable to cover up the operation cost but
its denial took the life of an innocent person. I partially justify these law
violations to fight and win over such big firms. If going by the law book was
ethical, the person could have never attained justice. The lawyer prioritized
his value above law and orders for the sake of justice. But, the movie
concluded by the lawyer's quitting his job. I was astonished by his decision.
The lawyer should have continued with his career for the sake of people's
justice in the same way he did earlier. This movie took in the situation where
I had to ponder upon various issues such as breaking up of laws, the influence of
power above all, the inner fight of ethics.
My conclusive and common reflection/reaction to The Rain Maker:
The movies put me in a dilemma over the extent
of ethics involved while defending such critical cases. The emotions and the
agony of the client cannot push the lawyer beyond rules and law. The lawyer can
still strive to find efficient ways to defend the case without compromising his
ethics.
